International Press release, january 6th 2009

European Court of Human Rights admits case against Dutch ministers for Schiphol Fire

The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has informed Dutch lawyer Mr.N.M.P. Steijnen that the Court has admitted the application against two former Dutch ministers, or the State,  in relation with the Schiphol Fire. This fire on the 26th of October 2005  killed eleven detained migrants in a detention center on the premises of Hollands main Schiphol airport.
Mr. Steijnen is pressing these charges representing  committee of non-governmental organizations, survivors and relatives of the deceased against Mr. J.P.H. (Piet Hein) Donner, who was at the time minister of Justice (and today of social affairs) and against Mrs. M.C.F. (Rita) Verdonk, who was at the time Minister of Immigration and Integration. They are charged with cruel and humiliating treatment (Art.3 ECHR) of both the killed inmates and the survivors of the fire. Donner is held responsible for the construction and the management of the complex, while Verdonk was in charge of the administrative detention of undocumented migrants and of the treatment of the survivors after the fire.

Radio Teranga special: Victor Nzuzi

Victor Nzuzi is a farmer, an activist and a radiomaker from Cogo, DRC. He visited Amsterdam as he was invited by All Included and the LOS Foundation (for undocumented migrants) to present his views on the reasons of African migrants and why they are right to come to Europe. Because Europe is responsible for the mess a country like Congo is in right now.

Victor uses original paintings to illustrate his story and he ended with a moving song. (In French)

And we wish a merry Xmas to all of you, including our man in Kinshasa, DRC: Steve Wembi (thats the tall white guy!)

The Moving Tree

English version below

Look with us, not at us.

We are not banana’s.

We need your help!

This picture has been taken on October 28, 2008, at sunset, two days after the commemoration and the installation of the monument.

The heart seems to rest on a cloud. It is a detail of the aluminium art tree which invites one to commemorate the Schiphol fire.

The hearts in the tree were made by the survivors of the Schiphol fire and their relatives.

The tree was made on the 25th of October in the Blue House and is designed by Ferdous Ara Lovely.

To following people realised the tree: Cheikh “Papa” Sakho, Jos Zandvliet, Rob Logister, Boubakar Cherrak, Jo van der Spek, GladysToekaja, Jennifer Oehlers, Kakha Piliev, Mary-Ann Lipman and Romaysa

The art tree was moved to the Schiphol-Oost detention center on the 26th of October to join the existing monument consisting of eleven wooden pilars for the eleven immigrants who died in the night of the 26th – 27th of October 2005.

On Thursday, November 20 2008, the tree was dismantled and stayed with the security of the detention center.

On Monday the 24th of November the tree went to Ringvaart en was sailed by salon boat Jaro to Nieuw en Meer, who adopted the tree. It will stay there temporarily in the village centre between other trees.

The idea is that it will move shortly to Het Buitenland, a field nearby.

It would not surprise us when the tree pops up at the detention center again next year, at the next commemoration.

We call it The Moving Tree for a reason.

Look with us, not at us.

The tree embodies the connection between the survivors and M2M radio. M2M radio is a web station which gives voice to survivors and immigrants. It tries to give an other look on migration and globalisation. We are not banana’s.

Jo van der Spek and Cheikh “Papa” Sakho, the founders of M2M radio and initiators of the commemoration offer you this card to welcome and thank you, as well as to ask for a donation. We need your help!
